From August 24th to 26th, 2016, some IBDP Grade 11 students attended the “Youths in Public Health Symposium” held by the Harvard Shanghai Center for three days. During the three days, lecturers in the field shared some basic knowledge of public health, critical thinking, and how to research and cooperate on public health projects.
On the first day, students learned some foundational knowledge in public health. The purpose of these foundational studies is to understand the different core subfields of public health which include epidemiology, environmental health, social and behavioral health, and health policy and management. Through the lectures, students were made aware of the big issues in each of these subfields.
On the first half of Day 2, the symposium focused on topic immersion to build students’ skill of thinking in an interdisciplinary manner.
For the second half of Day 2, students learnt skills in critical thinking. Lecturers taught students about measurements and evaluation, and to make sense of the findings, including identifying potential reasons of particular findings. Also, a few questions related to the content on the first day were asked to see how much the students had absorbed.
On the third day, students had a brainstorm of public health research and projects. They all found new friends with similar interests to collaborate with. Everyone took it seriously. After the research and discussion the whole morning, every group gave a 3-minute-presentation to show their knowledge gained in this symposium. After a round of voting from all the lecturers and students, the best group was commended.
From these three days of learning, all students acquired not only knowledge about public health, but also experienced different ways to learn. Moreover, they enjoyed the guidance from the Harvard mentors. Everyone expressed gratitude for this event and they look forward to having the opportunity to participate in similar activities to accumulate more experience.
Reflection from students
⬥ Throughthe forum, I learned a lot about public health, which I had known little before. After meeting many “elites” who were active in the forum, I realize that I must work harder as there are so many people more confident and smarter than me. However, I improved my communication skill, research skill and team work spirit by having a group presentation.
⬥ I learned a lot in the shanghai public health symposium.I also met many students who can speak English very well. The professor's lecture is attractive and the brain storming part gave me a lot of ideas.

⬥ In the Harvard Public Health Symposium, I met many foreign students, and those who are good at English. We discussed health problems together and shared different ideas. From this symposium, we not only learned more about health problems, but also exchanged our ideas. We can think more and communicate more now with people from different countries, so I feel more courageous.
