Kairan GUO clinches Band One position in the ‘2016 Cospace and Robot Cup (ROBOC) Competition’
IB学生郭恺然在“2016新加坡Cospace及机器人创客国际挑战赛”中斩获佳绩

During 22nd and 27th in February, one of our IB students---- Kairan GUO took part in the ‘2016 Cospace and ROBOC Competition’ and his team won the Top Band. 

222日至27日,我校IB学生郭恺然参加了“2016新加坡CoSpace及机器人创客国际挑战赛”,比赛期间表现出色, 斩获佳绩。

 

Sponsored by the RoboCup National Committee of Singapore and the European International School in Germany , this competition is oriented towards teenagers as well as fans of ROBOC around the world. Its main purpose is to provide teenage robot fans with an international platform for scientific and technological education and competition.

本次大赛由RoboCup机器人世界杯新加坡国家委员会和德国欧洲国际学校(新加坡)主办,是一项面向全球青少年机器人及创客爱好者的比赛,旨在为全球青少年机器人爱好者提供国际化的机器人科技教育和竞赛平台。

 

Kairan GUO’s team, composed of a Chinese student competed with other teams coming from Singapore , America and China , was awarded Band One in this RCJ CoSpace F1 Racing Challenge Competition. The requirement for this competition was to design a line- tracking for a robot, which will only be realized through simulating the programming. According to Kairan GUO, at first, the robot they designed could not run quickly enough. After some rigorous deliberation and analysis, he advised the team to reduce their original setting for the speed for the robot. This action achieved unexpected results and consequently, helped the team clinch the top spot for speed of performance.

在机器人世界杯RCJ CoSpace F1赛车挑战赛中,郭恺然同学和另一位本国学生一起组队,跟来自新加坡、美国等各国学生组成的其他队伍展开对垒。这次比赛要求每个小组设计一组机器人巡线,全部过程通过编程模拟实现。郭恺然同学说,起初他们设计的机器人跑得并不快,经过再三思考,他打破了思维定势,建议团队降低原先设计的速度,最终却取得了意料之外的效果,机器人在赛道上以最快的速度赢得了比赛。

 

The whole team had been assigned seven tasks and Kairan GUO, who undertook four of them, performed excellently in this competition. Those four tasks are push-up, summersaults, handstand and splits of the robot, which all demand complicated and strict programming. The act of summersaulting was especially demanding, requiring precise calculation and careful thinking. Fortunately, these four tasks and the three other tasks were all successfully implemented by Kairan GUO and his team members.

在最佳机器人创意国际挑战赛中,郭恺然同学也有出色表现。他们团队一共有六位同学,需要完成七项任务,郭恺然同学承担了其中四项,分别是机器人俯卧撑、机器人翻跟头和机器人倒立、机器人劈叉,这几项任务中机器人要完成的动作比较多,对编程的要求更加严。特别是机器人翻跟头这一项,要让机器人从地上站起来而不摔倒,这需要精确的计算和缜密的思维。庆幸的是,这几项任务他最后都顺利完成没有任何失误。而同组的其他五名同学也顺利完成了另外三项任务。

 

Through using the IB approach, Kairan GUO reflected that this competition served as an invaluable eye opener for him, enabling him to appreciate the advances in the Singaporean education system, the passion for robotic innovation displayed by all the participants, the enthusiasm of American students, the diligence of Singaporean students as well as the spirit of unity among Chinese students.

赛后,郭恺然以IB的学习方式进行了反思,他认为这项比赛给他打开了世界的一扇窗户,让他见识到新加坡教育的先进,也见识到了世界各国选手对机器人创新的热爱,还令他感受到了美国同学的热情,新加坡同学的勤奋,还有我们中国学生的团结。


Most importantly, Kairan GUO was able to appreciate in a deeper way the ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills he has acquired since entering the IB programme, such as communication and research skills, which helped him to think calmly and communicate actively.  At times he even played the role of translator during this competition, which he attributes to having been immersed in an English teaching environment in IBDP and the special guidance he has been given on English pronunciation. Moreover, he is particularly grateful to the lessons on the fundamentals of Color Theory he learned in the VA (Visual Arts) class, which he was able to harness to good effect during the scene building, something he is especially proud of.

同时,他也深深体会到进入IB以来所学到的各种学习方法技能,如沟通技能、研究技能等能够有效帮助他在这场赛事中严密冷静地思考、积极主动地交流,有时候他甚至还会充当英文翻译,他觉得这得益于IB的全英文环境和老师对他在语音上的特别指导。除此之外,他还特别感谢在视觉艺术课上学到的色彩理论,对色彩的理解,帮助他在创意挑战赛中设计了令他自豪的场景搭建。

 

After the competition, Kairan GUO also visited the National University of Singapore, where the clean and tidy environment, the spirit of innovation of students from all over the world, left a deep impression on him. As a result of his participation in this competition, he can picture more clearly his own future and has returned with a resolve to be more committed to his studies and exercise with more endurance and perseverance to realize his future dreams.

赛后,他还参观了新加坡国立大学,那里浓浓的学术氛围,新加坡花园城市的整洁美丽,还有各国同学的创新热情都令他回味再三。这次新加坡机器人大赛也令他感到未来更加清晰了,他准备更加努力地学习,坐下来,静下来,好好规划,奔向未来!
