Shanghai Shakespeare Festival Drama Contest Finals

On Saturday 5th December, the IBDP department sent two teachers to watch the grand finals of the Shanghai Shakespeare Festival Drama Contest held in the Children's Palace theatre. English A teacher, Estella Wong and Chinese A teacher cum Drama Club advisor, Laura Xu had a wonderful time observing how other participating schools prepared their students for the contest, and the kind of standard that could be expected by high school students on a public stage. The event saw six schools performing various scenes in Shakespeare's plays, ranging from the more famous tragedies including Hamlet and Othello, to the lesser performed comedies, such as A Comedy of Errors. The mesmerising props and live music were a feast for the senses, as were the confidently delivered speeches and songs in the original Shakespearian language. The teachers also learned a lot about the students' practice process and creative changes to the original scripts through the 'question and answer' session conducted with the esteemed judges at the end of each performance. It was agreed that our IBDP students could also put on drama performances of a similar calibre in the near future given the right amount of rehearsal time and a professional stage.
